New Years Day Food....

Happy Tuesday! I hope your New Year started off great! I have a lot of catching up to do on my blog reading! It was nice to be away from the computer for 3 days, but at the same time I missed blogging and I really missed reading everyone's blog.

I can't wait to see what everyone had to eat on New Years Day. Here in the south the tradition is to eat cabbage, black eyed peas, cornbread and hog jowl (yuck). I had a veggie sausage pattie in place of the traditional meat. :o) It's so funny that I eat cabbage now, because pre vegan days, I wouldn't have touched it, much less eaten it. I do love it now though. I fried the cabbage with some onion in a little olive oil, a splash of balsamic vinegar, salt and pepper. My husband even had some, which is huge because he does not like green stuff. I added some of my homemade green tomato salsa to my black eyed peas, which made them exceptionally good!

For dessert on New Years Day, I made PPK's Peanut Butter Chocolate Pillows. Let me just say....these were AWESOME! If you haven't tried them, and you love peanut butter and chocolate, you need to make them! They are rich, but oh so very good! The recipe can be found here.

My husband thought they would be pretty with powdered sugar sprinkled on top. :o)

About New Year's resolutions and goals, I actually think I have come up with too many....go figure. One big one is to get on an exercise plan and to clean up my diet. By cleaning up my diet, I mean to not eat as many processed foods and sweets. I also want to to incorporate more raw foods into my diet. As far as exercise, this should be exciting now. We got a Bowflex for Christmas...woohoo! But, it's still in the box...not put together yet. :-( This will change by this weekend though (hopefully) and an exercise plan with be put together. :o) I'm so excited about getting back into shape. I used to work out faithfully up until about 3 years ago. I've just gone down hill since then. So, one New Years goal is to get in shape...inside and out.

  1. Mmmm! Send those chocolate pillows my way!

Your New Years Meal looks alot better than mine! We tired a lentil-onion rice dish that just did not work out! In regards to cleaning up your diet, I think the more you cook vegan the easier it'll become. When I first started I ate alot of prepackaged foods and now its hardly none. The more I cook the more I prepare at home! Its really fantastic! But Im with you on the working out thing, my swimming and yoga have gone the wayside during the end of the semester and I'm not liking it.

  2. How exciting about the Bowflex! We had one quite a few years ago and eventually traded it in for free weights. Mike loves the free weights, but I miss the Bowflex.

I've made the peanut butter chocolate pillows before. They're a big hit with everyone I've given them to! So good. :)

  3. I like cabbage too, which I didn't before. I LOVE kimchi especially! I saw those chocolate pillows on another blog and ever since then I really wanted that cookbook! Nice to see your traditional meal :) I made poi balls, that is all the tradition we have that is vegan anyways.

  4. Oh man, those chocolate-peanut butter pillows look so good! I have some extra time off this month, and my hubby is requesting home baked goodies...these will certainly be on the list.

Your New Year's day meal sounds great...i can't remember what we had on New Years Day...

  5. I agree with Rose. One of these days I will have to make some of the chocolate peanut butter pillows.

  6. Those pillow do look wonderful!!!

Cabbage for New Year? Really? It is great to find out about all the different traditions... I would never thought of cabbage though :-)

  7. i love piggy jowls!! i like to grab my piggys cute little face and kiss'em they are so fat!lol!! but to eat? thats pretty rough stuff...

like you, there is lots of stuff that i might not EVER have tried if i werent vegan. i think that a lot of people are like that.your pillows look so professional!! great job and happy new year!!

  8. I absolutely love the PPK PB Pillows there one of my favs!!!

  9. Thanks for the link to the recipe. These PB Pillows will go straight to my jowls!

  10. We actually don't have a tradition for New Years Day. Maybe I should look into starting one. Good luck on keeping your resolutions.

  11. Your cornbread and New Year's plate looks good! I had my black eyed peas, but no cabbage. Your method sounds tasty. I'm jealous of your green tomato salsa, I was in Philly for New Years and couldn't find any suitable pea topping.

  12. Did your husband actually use the word "pretty"? :) Those look sooo good. I think I made something like that once, but they didn't turn out nearly as good as yours.
