Green Pinapple-Mango Smoothie

Last nights dinner was a 'do-over' from Saturday night. Tony liked the tostadas so well that he wanted them again last night. Of course I was fine with that. I think I could live off Mexican and Italian food!

This morning for breakfast I whipped up a green smoothie. This time I used some frozen pineapples and mangos, 1 frozen banana, a large hand full of spinach, 2 tablespoons of hemp seeds and about a cup of orange juice. Just put all that in a blender and blend until all creamy. It sure did make a pretty bright green drink. :o)

So, I bought the book “Becoming Vegan” about a month ago and have only read the first few pages. I've made my mind up that starting tonight I will read a chapter every night before I go to bed until I finish it! I have heard it is packed with great information, which I really need, since I am still fairly new to the vegan lifestyle. I wonder sometimes if I am eating the right foods. I really don’t think I am getting enough protein in my diet, so who knows what else I need that I’m not getting. Do you plan your meals daily to make sure you get enough protein, vitamins and minerals? I’m really hoping that this book helps me to understand more! Any input that you guys may have in this area would be greatly appreciated!

~Peace~

  1. As far as input goes, I find that a protein-filled breakfast is key. That's just my opinion, though.

  2. That smoothie is a beautiful color...sounds good too.

My advice would be to eat a varied whole foods diet that includes a wide variety of fruits and vegetables esp. your dark leafy greens, raw nuts and seeds, beans and other legumes, whole grains (quinoa is especially high in protein) and mushrooms all provide a lot of nutrients...and don't forget that even fruits and veggies have proteins in them...eating a wide variety ensures that you will get the full spectrum of protein acids to ...you don't have to eat them all in the same meal.

This is a fact that always surprises people, I know I was surprised:

there's more protein in 100 calories worth of broccoli than there is in 100 calories of steak.

Looks to me like your on the right track...and it's good that you're reading up on it....I think going vegan is a process of discovery...

  5. Mmm, yummy looking smoothie. I really need to get on the ball with those.

As for your question, I just try to eat a varied diet. Alot of concerns like 'am I eating enough protien?' come from other people around you. Most people (and the meat industry) like to believe that protien only comes from meat, which isnt true. Most people eat too much. When I first went vegan I thought a bit about what I should or shouldn't eat but after a while it became very natural. Your body will tell you what it wants! :)

  6. I love mango, I bet that goes really well in a smoothie. I love the variety of smoothie colors!

I'm no expert, but I think your meals look varied and complete. I agree with the others - much of your questioning has to do with others asking you where you're getting various nutrients. I just heard a piece on the radio about the meat industry being upset about omnivores adopting "Meatless Monday." Really?

But I'm working on becoming healthier, too, and it's important to consult trusted resources for advice. You don't want to be a pasta vegetarian! (you're not. I was when I first went veg in college a decade ago.) Maybe you've noticed this, too -- it's crazy to go from hearty, tasty, "health" foods back to junk food. For instance, I just ate some white bread that didn't require chewing. It just made me hungry for whole grains.

  7. Marja,I am trying to do better at adding more protein to my breakfast.

Rose, I had no idea that there's more protein in 100 calories worth of broccoli than there is in 100 calories of steak. Thanks for all your input!

Aimee, I feel the same way about smoothies!

Thanks Shen, I'll be glad when I feel better about what I am eating.

Jessica @ Lima's, that makes so much sense what you said about people who eat meat. When they question me, I do start questioning myslef.

Jessica, you know I could really live off pasta! I love it that much! I know what you mean about going from hearty healthy foods back junk. I really want mine to stay healthy. :o)

Thanks everyone for your input! I really do appreciate it!
