Fried Green Tomatoes

Happy Friday! First thing for today is I have to thank Shen over at The Shenandoah Vegan for the fried green tomatoes that I cooked last night. Her comment on my post yesterday influenced these babies. I don't know where the southern girl in me went, for me not to make fried green tomatoes out of some of the green Roma's that we have growing. :o) But, the southern girl came out in me last night !

I changed up the recipe this time, and I think they turned out much better than the last batch that I cooked back in the summer. These rocked! Of course I did use Roma's this time instead of regular green tomatoes. Have I mentioned before that Roma's are my favorite tomatoes to eat?
Here's what I did this time.

1/2 cup all purpose flour (unbleached)
1/2 cup cornmeal
1/2 cup plain soy milk
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon basil
1/2 teaspoon oregano
1/4 teaspoon pepper
5-6 green Roma's
canola oil for frying

Place flour, cornmeal and soy milk into 3 separate small bowls. Add 1/2 teaspoon of salt, 1/4 teaspoon of the garlic powder, onion powder, basil, oregano and 1/8 teaspoon of the pepper to both the flour and cornmeal. Mix the spices in well. Dip each tomato slice into the flour, then soy milk, then into the cornmeal. Make sure they are coated well. Then, put coated tomatoes in a deep fryer like a "Frydaddy" and cook until golden brown. Let them drain on paper towels to soak up some of the excess oil.

tomatoes...tomatoes...tomatoes...they are everywhere.

The delicious fried-ness....

An update on all those green Roma's that we have. I decided to do what Rose suggested, and hang one of the vines upside down to see if the tomatoes would ripen on it. I can't wait to see what the outcome will be. Hopefully the results will be good. We decided to harvest the other green Roma's. We picked all the bigger ones off the vines last night and ended up with a little over 300. I am going to make some green salsa out of some of them and of course some more fried green tomatoes. We still had a lot of smaller tomatoes on the vines, so we covered them up last night so they will hopefully survive the cold weather that we are having this weekend.

I wasn't going to mention my lunch, but I tried a different dish from the Chinese Restaurant up the road from where I work. Today I ordered the Bean Curd (tofu) with Broccoli. I normally get the Bean Curd with mixed Veggies. I like this one much better. They've been doing much better at getting my order correct lately too. I think they must have had a new lady awhile back that didn't understand English very well. So....Yay for No. 1 Chinese. :o)

I also wanted to mention to you about a $40 CSN giveaway that is going on over at veganandsoforth. Jenny's giveaway is going on until November 11th, so be sure and stop by her blog and register. CSN has so many great things to choose from!

~Peace~

Thanks for the recipe. And since I know it is a bona fide Southern Fried Green Tomato recipe, I am going to try it: I've never had them before. I've obviously been missing out. I just have to find some green tomatoes, my tomato plants are dead and gone long ago.

You have got a BUMPER crop! Over 300 wow! Tomatoes must like at your place! I'll have to get some tomato growing tips from you next season!

The tofu looks awesome too...it even gives Shen's a run for its money.

  8. That's an insane amount of tomatoes! Have you considered asking a food bank if they can help you use them? Are green tomatoes good in salsa? All I can think of is canning.
Check out food snobbery is my hobbery; I think she has canning recipes for green tomatoes :)
